Our board of trustees is made up of members of the community and aims to be representative of the areas where we deliver our services. The board provide strategic guidance and governance to ensure that we meet the needs of the local community and that we uphold the vision and Christian values of the YMCA.
David Daly, Chair
David has been a supporter of the YMCA for 17 years ever since he took part in a sponsored cycle ride from Birmingham to London many years ago raising funds for YMCA’s current site in Sutton. David also sits on the Finance sub-committee and was appointed as chair at the start of 2021.
Having seen the work of the staff on the team, and their heart and soul efforts, I feel it’s the least I can do to contribute my time to help in any way I can.
David runs a small property business in the private rented housing sector after a career in consultancy for the construction industry.
David Owen
David is our longest standing board member and has been a trustee for over 30 years.
He was born in Sutton Coldfield and has been heavily involved in many of the town’s community activities. David first became involved with the YMCA Central Region in the 1960s and supports the Christian ethos of the YMCA as he strongly believes that it helps young people in their journey to adulthood.
The many activities and services offered by the YMCA encourage young people to have a sense of belonging and a respect for all.
David was chairman of family company Rubery Owen for many years and has been able to use his wide business experience and expertise for the good of charity and community, helping to shape the future for young people in Sutton Coldfield.
Beverley Redguard
Bev is a new board member and a local mom of three who runs a family business with her husband. Bev and her family have benefited from the services of the YMCA as her son use to attend the K-KATS project so when she was approached to be a board member it was a no brainer. It was the ideal opportunity to give something back.
Sutton Coldfield is known for being a nice leafy suburb, with nice big houses but being part of the YMCA acts as a stark reminder that not everyone in the community is fortunate to have their own house.
Bev is keen to support more homeless young people to get their own place to call home.
Phil Scully
Phil has been a board member since November 2017 and I live in Sutton Coldfield
I support the YMCA Sutton Coldfield for the range of programmes it delivers to help and support people within the local community.
Phil is a lawyer, practising in the field of property litigation. He advise clients on a range of property-related disputes at a firm that focuses upon social purpose. His clients include housing associations, charities and local authorities.
Lorraine Worthington-Allen
Lorraine is the newest member of our board, joining in September 2024, after providing support to us over the last couple of years.
I’m looking forward to supporting YMCA Sutton Coldfield in the invaluable work that they do in providing services to young people
Lorraine’s a commercial specialist within the public sector. She’s been involved in various charitable activities including delivering youth work, supporting homelessness projects, fundraising and creating contracts and grant agreements with charities throughout her career.
Danielle Williams
Danielle has been a part of YMCA Sutton Coldfield since 2000, bringing over two decades of experience in youth & community work and is a Sutton Coldfield resident.
Currently serving as Operations and Engagement Manager for Our Place Support she is dedicated to enhancing services that uplift the local community.
By supporting our community and building on services the YMCA has to offer we can help young people to make a difference in their lives and support them to reach their full potential.
With a deep passion for supporting young people, Danielle works to ensure children and young people’s voices are heard, helping them to make positive changes and reach their full potential. By building on the YMCA’s offerings and driving community-focused initiatives, she is committed to making a lasting impact in Sutton Coldfield.
Alex Yip
Councillor Alex Yip is the Councillor for Sutton Wylde Green ward, Birmingham City Council, Shadow Cabinet Member for Social Justice, Community Safety and Equalities, has been a Birmingham Magistrate since 2009, a school governor since 2007 and a trustee of the City of Birmingham Orchestra (CBSO) since 2018.
I am delighted to join as a Trustee of the Sutton Coldfield YMCA within his ward of Wylde Green whose work covers much of his previous portfolio overseeing Children, Young People and Families.
After graduating from Leicester University with a Masters in International Relations in 2004, he taught English in Shanghai for a year after volunteering in Ghana and Zambia. He has since returned many times spending considerable time volunteering across Africa through the Conservatives Friends of International Development (CFID) programs teaching budding entrepreneurs business skills in Rwanda and Tanzania in 2017 and 2018. He was a past Board Director of the Conservative Christian Fellowship (CCF), a passionate supporter of raising Mental Health awareness regularly fundraising for MIND mental health in the past. A proud Brummie he enjoys playing chess, skiing, badminton, and a very happy father of two.
