I was in a really bad place when I first came to the YMCA. I’m so grateful for all the support that the staff have offered me. It’s a great place to stay and the YMCA have really helped me get back on my feet.
Kieran is 18 years old. When we first met him, he was homeless and desperate with nowhere to go. Having spent several months sofa surfing, Kieran was a victim of hidden homelessness, so called because the homelessness is not as visible as it is with people sleeping rough. Kieran was neither working nor claiming benefits and it was clear he needed some help and support.
We identified that Kieran needed help in adapting to independent living as well as assistance with his financial situation. We also realised that Kieran was struggling with low self-esteem and lack of self-confidence.
The transformation we have seen in Kieran whilst he has been staying with us is incredible. Over the last year, Kieran has really moved forward with his life. He has adapted well to living independently, mixing socially with other residents, communicating well and making new friends. With our help, Kieran was also able to access the financial support he needed.
His confidence has improved significantly and when we introduced Kieran to an apprenticeship opportunity, he jumped at the chance to improve his skills. Kieran now works full time as an apprentice in the hospitality industry, gaining skills for a much brighter future. We’re really proud of how far Kieran has come in a short space of time and will continue to support him on his journey to full independence.
