Young carers often face unique challenges when trying to balance their education and future aspirations with their caregiving responsibilities. Luke’s journey illustrates how targeted support can help young adult carers achieve their ambitions without sacrificing their responsibilities at home.
When Luke first sought support, he was shy, reserved, and unsure about how to pursue his career goals while caring for his mother. Despite having a structured routine, he felt his dreams were on hold, uncertain if he could manage both his chosen career and his caregiving role.
Through multiple one-to-one sessions, we worked closely with Luke to explore university options that aligned with his degree choice, swimming career, and his mother’s needs. Partnering with the University of Birmingham, we were able to provide signposting and additional information, helping him identify the best options. We also assisted him with writing his personal statement and UCAS application, ensuring he was fully prepared for the next step.
As a result of this support, Luke was accepted into his chosen university, joined the GB recreational swimming team, and secured new housing that allowed him to continue supporting his mother while pursuing his dreams.
Luke has gained confidence, formed new social circles, and now has multiple sources of support to help him balance his studies and caring responsibilities. Most importantly, he no longer feels he has to give up his aspirations to care for his mother.
Luke is incredibly grateful for the support received from YMCA Sutton Coldfield, which helped him regain control over his future while ensuring his mother continues to get the care she needs.
