Jack is a dedicated college student, but his responsibilities go far beyond the classroom. As a caregiver for his mother, who suffers from severe mental health challenges and chronic pain, he faces obstacles that many of his peers do not. With support from YMCA Sutton Coldfield, Jack was able to continue his education while managing his caregiving duties.
Before November 2023, Jack’s college attendance was extremely low, leading to his removal from the institution. His college was unaware of his caregiving role, and without proper support, he struggled to maintain his education while looking after his mother.
After meeting Jack, it was clear he wanted to succeed in college but needed flexibility. YMCA Sutton Coldfield facilitated discussions with his college’s pastoral team, allowing him to modify his schedule, take online classes, and receive an extended bursary to ease financial strain. Regular one-to-one meetings were set up to ensure ongoing support and communication.
Jack also experiences anxiety, which makes studying difficult. Music helps him cope, so he used part of his statutory carers bursary to purchase noise-cancelling headphones, significantly improving his focus and motivation. His grades have since reflected this positive change.
Jack’s journey highlights the challenges young carers face and the impact of tailored support. By supporting YMCA Sutton Coldfield, you can help more young adult carers access the resources they need to succeed.
