Bethany's Story

At just nine years old, Bethany* has taken on a caring role that would be overwhelming for any adult. She looks after her elderly grandmother, who has suffered two strokes in the past year, significantly impacting her mobility and fine motor skills. With limited support from other family members, who all live outside of Birmingham, Bethany has had to shoulder immense responsibility.

Bethany has lived with her grandparents for the past two years, with little contact from either of her parents. She has two older siblings, but they do not live with her. Tragically, her grandfather recently passed away, leaving Bethany and her grandmother alone in the family home. As a result, Bethany rarely socialises with friends outside of school, dedicating most of her time to caring for her grandmother.

Since being referred to our Young Carers project, we have worked to build Bethany’s confidence and encourage her to attend youth club. Understanding her concerns about leaving her grandmother, we liaised with a trusted neighbour who now sits with her twice a week, allowing Bethany to take time for herself. A significant milestone came when Bethany attended her first full-day trip during half term—a huge step in prioritising her own needs.

Both her school and grandmother have noticed a remarkable change in Bethany. She is happier, more confident, and now benefits from much-needed respite. We are incredibly proud of her progress and will continue supporting her on her journey.
