Aoife’s Story

Aoife has been a dedicated member of YMCA Sutton Coldfield’s young carers project for over 10 years. She has always been enthusiastic about joining activities and sharing ideas, building strong relationships with fellow young carers and staff. Her journey showcases resilience, determination, and the incredible impact of support for young carers.

As a young carer, Aoife faced significant challenges while balancing her responsibilities with personal ambitions. In 2022, she was diagnosed with Tourette Syndrome, which presented additional hurdles. Despite this she remained eager to pursue her passion for drama and theatre, while also advocating for young carers like herself.

At the start of 2023, Aoife was given the chance to create a podcast alongside two other young carers. She embraced the opportunity with enthusiasm, helping to launch the ‘Why Teens Podcast’—a platform highlighting young carers’ challenges and celebrating their successes. Her energy and commitment played a vital role in getting the podcast nominated for the Inspirational Youth Awards 2024.

YMCA Sutton Coldfield also supported Aoife’s love of theatre by organising a trip to see Hamilton, further fuelling her passion for performance. With additional guidance, she successfully secured a place at University to study drama, marking a new chapter in her journey.

Aoife’s confidence has flourished. She has expanded her social circles, gained recognition for her efforts, and proven that no hurdle is too big. Her acceptance into university to pursue her dream course is a testament to her dedication and the support she received.

Aoife’s story demonstrates how the right support can transform lives. Help us continue providing opportunities for young carers to thrive.
