In 2021, Adam* moved into YMCA Sutton Coldfield after spending years in foster placements. Having previously volunteered at our holiday club for children, he was familiar with our work but remained anxious about moving into supported living, having faced frequent relocations throughout his upbringing.
His journey in the care system began as an infant when his young mother, struggling with parental responsibilities at just fifteen years old, was unable to provide the stability he needed. Without support from his father, he experienced numerous foster placements before settling in a long-term foster home in 2007. Despite this, he carried the emotional weight of past transitions, including the loss of temporary caregivers to whom he had become attached.
As a child, he was diagnosed with a speech disorder that continues to impact his confidence today. His stutter worsens under stress, making communication challenging and sometimes leading to feelings of isolation. The situation became even more complex when he reconnected with his biological mother, witnessing her struggles with substance abuse and schizophrenia. Our staff provided emotional support and talking therapies, ensuring he had a safe space to process his experiences.
Since joining YMCA Sutton Coldfield, he has gained confidence, developed friendships, and learned essential life skills, from budgeting to cooking. He has participated in enriching activities, including residential trips and sporting events such as the Commonwealth Games. Most significantly, he has recently completed training as a professional security guard, preparing for full-time employment and independent living.
Adam’s transformation highlights the vital role of stable, supportive environments for care-experienced young people. With additional funding, we can continue providing these life-changing opportunities, helping more young people discover who they are and what they could become.
